Political analyst Dr. Euston Chiputa has warned newly sworn-in Members of Parliament representing the youth under the mixed member proportional representation against getting carried away by their new positions and neglecting their responsibilities.
Dr. Chiputa, who is also University of Zambia (UNZA) says the young lawmakers, especially those coming from university student unions, should remember that they are no longer representing students but young people across the country.
Speaking in an interview with One Love Radio news, Dr. Chiputa says the MPs should broaden their focus to issues affecting youths from all walks of life, including those in rural and urban areas and the remotest parts of the country.
βThey must keep their feet on the ground and not get excited, and ensure that issues of the youth, not just issues of the students, because issues pertaining to the students mostly have been attend to by government even before the youths got into parliament, but issues pertaining to the general populace of the youth in Zambia,β he said.
Dr Chiputa says the lawmakers should ensure that the voices and demands of young people are taken into Parliament and reflected in national decision-making, adding that this will help ensure that the challenges affecting young people are properly raised and addressed in Parliament.
