A member of the Veterinary Association of Zambia has called on Government to compensate farmers whose animals are killed under test-and-slaughter programmes to help strengthen the fight against anthrax.
Henry Ndandalika said lack of compensation may cause some farmers to hide animals suspected of having anthrax because they fear losing their livestock without recovering their losses.
Speaking when he featured on the Neighbourhood Radio programme on One Love Radio, Mr. Ndandalika said such practices can make it difficult for authorities to control the spread of the disease.
βA farmer who is scared of test and slaughter for CBPP (Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia) and FMD (Foot-and-Mouth Disease) must realise that they are carrying a problem further for their neighbours, for their brothers and sister and eventually, there will be no animals to actually protect,β he said.
He said compensating affected farmers could encourage them to report suspected cases and cooperate with veterinary authorities.
And Mr. Ndandalika also urged farmers to vaccinate their animals against anthrax, saying the vaccines are affordable, saying preventing anthrax among animals is important because the disease can also to humans and cause serious complications including deaths.
